Swing Bed in-patient Rehabilitation

Glenn Medical Center is a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital that can accept short-term rehabilitating or skilled nursing patients. “Swing bed” is a service that CMS (MediCare) allows in small acute care hospitals to rehabilitate patients who would otherwise go to a “Nursing home”. Our swing bed services are provided in our general acute care unit, which enables us to provide more comprehensive care to our patients.

Swing bed services allow patients to receive skilled care services once acute hospital care is no longer required, but the patient continues to need services that cannot be easily provided in the patient’s home. The benefits of utilizing Glenn Medical Center over a traditional skilled nursing facility include:

No long term patients, all patients are rehabilitating. Patients are surrounded by others with the same goal, maximum rehabilitation to be successful at home;

On-site hospitalists physicians that round daily and see swing bed patients at least twice a week or more as needed;

On-site laboratory and radiology services;
On-site Respiratory Therapists;
Acute care staffing, 1 licensed nurse to <5 patients (nursing homes staff with much fewer licensed nurses);
Registered Dietician on site for complex diet education; tube feedings and TPN;
Compounding pharmacy; IV Antibiotics and other treatments available 24/7;
Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy and / Speech-Language Pathologist on-site;
Wound care physician rounds every week; can accept complex wounds/wound vac;
No long term patients, all patients are rehabilitating;
Small environment with personalized care. Less than 25 patients on the unit.
