Ophthalmologist Val K. Shaw, M.D.¬†specializes in Cataracts, Dry Eye, LASIK, Eye Exams and Eyeglasses. Dr. Shaw and Glenn Medical Center’s health care professionals develop a high level of comprehensive care in Glenn County by providing eye exams for the diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Cataracts

  • Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Detached Retina

  • Floaters & Flashs

  • Macular Degeneration

  • Glaucoma

  • Dry Eye

  • Low Vision

It is important for people with hypertension, diabetes or a family history of glaucoma and for all people over the age of 55 to get regular eye exams. Most insurance plans will cover these exams. An eye screening is also recommended if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Headaches when reading, watching TV or the computer
  • A sandy-gritty irritation or burning in the eyes
  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Problems with light, such as headlights that seem too bright, glare from lamps or very bright sunlight
  • Colors that seem faded
  • Poor night vision
  • Double or multiple vision
  • Optical aids such as eyeglasses or contact lenses are no longer effective
  • Loss of side vision
  • An inability to adjust the eye to darkened rooms
  • Difficulty focusing on close work
  • Rainbow colored rings or halos around lights
  • Frequent changes in glasses or contact lenses

Dr. Shaw received his medical degree from University of California, Irvine in 1972. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Emergency Trauma at LA County Hospital through a combined program at UCLA and USC prior to completing his ophthalmology residency and fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Shaw also practiced as a consulting ophthalmologist for the Army at the 143rd Evacuation Hospital. He was the Assistant Chief of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine as well as Chief of the Division of Ocular Pathology. Dr. Shaw has preformed many aspects of eye surgery including laser surgery, retinal detachments, glaucoma procedures, cataract and intraocular lens procedures, cosmetic and reconstructive oculoplastic surgery and pediatric care. He returned home to Chico in 1978 and has cared for patients at Glenn Medical Center since 2007.

New patients are welcome – no referrals needed. Medical, Medicare and most private insurances are accepted.
